A Canadian Embassy-sponsored field trip to a small farming village near Huichapan sparked our entrepreneurial spirits. Our new friend Ricardo toured us through woman-owned farms using innovative approaches to sustainable farming including the use of hydroponic techniques to feed cattle (limiting the impact on the land), reusing natural water sources for irrigation, and making use of natural farm waste to fertilize crops.

The region of Huichapan is also exploring eco-tourism as a means to retain crucial forested land. A microcosm of sustainable agriculture at its best!
