G(irls)20 Summit- Google Global Mentorship Program Launched

A global program investing in the development of girls and women

July 12, 2013 — The G(irls)20 Summit in collaboration with Google, is pleased to announce the official kick- off the G(irls)20 Summit – Google Global Mentorship Program. This Global Mentorship Program has been created to support girls around the world by providing them access to women at Google so they can seek advice in terms of career and academic guidance. Over 300 Google staff and 150 young women have been matched through this initiative.

“Access to mentors is a game changer when it comes to pursuing goals and opportunities you may have otherwise avoided. In partnership with one of the most successful companies in the world, we are providing girls from around the globe with access to a variety of perspectives so they can explore their professional pursuits and find ways that they themselves can contribute to their communities,” said Farah Mohamed, President and CEO of G(irls)20 Summit.

“Google is excited to partner with G(irls)20 in this cross-functional global mentorship initiative that we are sure will be incredibly valuable for mentees and mentors alike,” said Carly Elson, a marketing manager at Google who is co-leading the mentorship initiative with G(irls)20.

This is an innovative model that allows for commitment while being flexible to the needs of the mentors and mentees. In some cases a mentee will receive advice from a panel of Googlers who range in their experience from marketing to technical expertise.

BACKGROUND

The G(irls)20 Summit is modeled after the G20 leaders meeting: it brings together one delegate from each G20 country, and a representative from the African Union. Delegate’s debate, discusses, and design innovative solutions for the economic challenges facing the leaders. The participants are all girls, aged 18-20.
